about

I can hear, potentially, four separate projects, but let's see what transpires.

Preliminal ~ As a teenager I was heavily into the cyberpunk idea, and it has struck me over the last couple of years that it is no longer fiction. That's one thought behind this piece. Another is the idea of liminality as the thing I've been groping after all these years, the thing that ties together what may at first be seemingly disparate interests. I have a few other sketches/improvisations on the later Ephemera compilations that may be developed along similar lines as this one.

Effortless ~ A recreation of a track from 2014. I consider this sort of thing a kind of 'folk form' in electronic music, if that makes sense - the John Carpenter groove, you might call it. At the time of originally writing it, I was annoyed at something, probably trying to get my head around how to feel when one's music is suddenly out in public and responses are not what you expected. I correctly guessed that if I 'effortlessly' did something in this vein it would go down well (when I would have rather been writing something less 'obvious' in my ears). It then became my most played track on Soundcloud so I deleted the files out of spite. What a silly man!

Body Cosmic ~ When I was running the Endurance club night that inspired Body Party, around 2009 onwards, you really had to hunt for Belgian New Beat tracks. Since then there have been a number of compilations and reissues and I spent some of last year going through these and finding many tracks that I was not aware of when DJing. There's another track of mine coming out on a compilation soon, and then this one and a couple of others in progress, that I wouldn't call New Beat, but are obviously influenced. Another influence is the pseudo 'world music' slant of some other balearic-type cosmic tracks I had on a lot last year. Obvious title for the track then!

Cavern Dwellers ~ Somebody told me that the original 'Cavern', now found on Ephemera volume 10, was their most played track of the year. Which is a really odd thing to hear as I considered it only half an idea... anyway I was toying with fleshing it out recently and this happened. This one suddenly came together over just a few hours. I don't know about you but I can very clearly hear dwarves singing as they mine, their voices echoing along with the clang of the smiths' anvils forging their tools.
