about

The music collected here was originally recorded in what I think of as the 'Cosmic Angst' period, following my first album 'Unknown Zones'. The ideas on that first album split off into two directions, the folk & fantasy-influenced Wizard Disco (see 'Matter', 'The Rash Boon' etc) and the more traditional 'Berlin School' style cosmic synth.

(Speaking of traditional synthesizer music, it occurs to me now that the orbs on the cover look rather like tangerines!)

Side A contains shorter tracks grouped into a kind of suite, all with a loose improvised style. During 2016 I returned to these tracks for a limited cassette release of this same album (you can find these tracks on the 'Ephemera' compilation). At that time I was listening to less electronic music and more band-based progressive rock, and I think this rubbed off on some of my arrangements. I've included the track 'Chess' again here, in a slightly different version - the previous cassette release I mentioned featured it in between 'Keep On' and 'Oasis' and it just didn't sound right without it in there again.

The album is named for the traditional long-form piece on Side B. The term 'Mytheme' refers to the idea of fundamental story elements that can be found in many myths and legends - similar to the (original, pre-internet) idea of the meme. I believe I first read about it when researching the film director Jodorowsky and his now-legendary unmade version of 'Dune'.
